John Lewis: Weekly fashion sales up 3 percent

Total sales at John Lewis for the week to February 9, 2019 were down 3.2 percent on the same week last year. The company said in a statement that fashion sales during the week under review were up 3 percent.

The company saw strong demand for new season collections in women's accessories and menswear where sales increased by 11.4 percent and 8.9 percent respectively. Price matching a competitor promotion on beauty products helped increase sales in beauty, wellbeing and leisure by 1.7 percent on last year.

Home sales were down 4 percent, while sales of gift products were up 10.8 percent. The company added that electrical and home technology sales were down 7.8 percent due to annualising a strong week last year, while communications technology products were up 2.5 percent driven by strong sales of tablets.
