Fashion

As one of the most prestigious events in the fashion calendar, Milan Fashion Week is known for its wealth of heritage family-owned fashion houses and ultra-luxurious styles. From Prada, Missoni and Gucci to Marni, Fendi and Versace, offerings from the city's high-end designer labels prove hugely influential in the world of womenswear, and often set the standard for new season styles around the world. This season, ready-to-wear collections demonstrated a playful aesthetic for Spring/Summer 2016, as sweet candied shades and fresh takes on retro-inspired details influenced many of the big-name shows. Notable highlights included revamped 60's silhouettes and solid colour blockings. Fresh off the Milanese runways, the Trendstop catwalk editors have rounded up a selection of standout S/S16 collections, chosen for their fashion-forward aesthetics and progressive approach to warm weather styles.

New Abstractions Marni

Creative director Consuelo Castiglioni channels a nouveau approach to abstract aesthetics in the new Marni collection, as boldly reduced shapes are deployed to maximum effect. Striking cartoon-bright mash-ups of primary shades complement flatly streamlined silhouettes, while unexpected inserts of sports mesh, oversized pailettes and sensuous ribbed knit amplify the range's simplified surface palette.

Minimal Maritime Sportmax

A heightened, Mod-flavoured minimalism influences Sportmax's Spring/Summer 2016 creatioms, with a full array of nautical classics given a contemporary rework. Bold shades of black, white, navy and yellow infuse sleekly stripped-down silhouettes like utilitarian outerwear and unstructured separates. Meanwhile, maritime references surface at every level, from stripes and anchor chain prints to warped fishnet motifs.

Retro Eclecticism - Prada

The notion of modern-day formalwear lies at the root of Miuccia Prada's latest offering. Stark monochrome checks, stripes and solids echo the discipline of two-piece suits and overcoats, which are deconstructed and refocused with graphic accents and colour pops. Placement stripes inject an athletic formality, enhanced by disruptive sheers, glossy vinyls, fluttering appliqué and webbed embellishment.
