Milan men's fashion week is the first foray of designers to show in the credit crunch climate and the atmosphere in arguably the world's most glamourous fashion capital was rightly sober. Boutiques continued their sale, desperately trying to clear their old stock, at a time when most designers take advantage of merchandising their stores to show only Spring Summer product. There were no major designer parties on the calendar for fear of a backlash against ostentatious spending. Rumours of models not being paid and of houses presenting static collections who this season could not afford costly runway shows was the talk of the town.

The key show at the start of the week was Jil Sander, and Raf Simons incorporated the current mood with a shorter show, less models, and a paired-down engineered silhouette focusing on cut and quality of classic but ultra-modern menswear. The key trend saw a higher closing, longer jacket, with an exaggerated shoulder and nipped in waist almost producing an hourglass effect. The sleek tailoring and directional fabrics will please the customer who defies the crunch and is after something new.
