Google has published its 14th annual ‘Year in Search’ results and revealed that fashion retailer New Look took the top spot in the most searched for fashion brand category in the UK. The fashion chain took the honour ahead of high street rivals Warehouse, River Island, Topshop and Zara, who completed the top five fashion brands.

Other fashion brands to make the top 10 in the UK included Coast, H&M, Ted Baker, Mango and Ralph Lauren. While Next, John Lewis and Marks & Spencer’s might not have made the top 10 most searched for fashion brands, they were listed in the top 10 searched for businesses, with fashion and homeware store Next taking third place behind Rightmove and Gumtree, while department store John Lewis came sixth and Marks & Spencer tenth.

In contrast, Google’s results for the US found a rather surprising name topping the most searched for fashion designers of 2014, with video blogger Bethany Mota claiming the top spot ahead of Kate Spade, Oscar de la Renta and Rachel Roy for her fashion line for Aéropostale. Making up the top ten was L’Wren Scott, Valentino, Alexander Wang, Sherri Hill, a prom dress designer, Edith Flagg, a 94-year old fashion designer who died in August, and Tina Knowles.

The US results also revealed the 10 most searched fashion questions, with “how to wear a scarf” coming in at number-one, followed by “what to wear to a wedding,” “what to wear on an interview” “what to wear on a first date,” “what to wear to a concert,” “how to wear a beanie,” “what to wear with leggings,” “how to wear ankle boots,” “how to wear a maxi skirt” and “what color matches brown.”

Google’s annual review of the billions of searches made covered a variety of categories including sport, news, celebrities, YouTube videos, losses, diets, movies and holiday destinations.
