Paul Smith bins it

Fashion designer Paul Smith created a new London Rubbish Bin as part of the ‘Super Contemporary’ exhibition at the Design Museum this June. Paul Smith’s rubbish bins are modelled like giant rabbits standing 5ft high. In British Racing Green, the rabbits hold a waste paper bag inviting passers by to get rid of their litter responsibly. With every litter deposit, the rabbit’s ears will light up and sparkle. The bins are an innovative way to brighten up the capital as well as a light-hearted answer to litter in London.

On the project Paul Smith commented: “I was pleased to be asked to be involved in the Super Contemporary exhibition at the Design Museum - I must admit I found it quite challenging, because in any city there are always so many things you love and so many things you don’t and so many things you want to improve. I tried to keep my idea simple and hopefully interesting - I am always amazed how bad people are about litter and how they are so thoughtless. My exhibit is hopefully a tiny step towards making people be better with their rubbish.”

The Super Contemporary exhibition celebrates and examines the creative magnetism of London and its enduring reputation as the heart of contemporary design. 15 Commissions from London’s movers and shakers including Paul Smith, Thomas Heatherwick and Ron Arad, are on display showcasing what they would give back to London.
