High-end French design has never gone out of fashion, and a recent growing interest in French high street brands is inspiring its London counterparts and making its way to our wardrobes.

French luxury brands such as Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton are some of the most covetable designers in the world and the French have a reputation for glamour and sophistication unlike any other nation. Until recently, the French high street had little to offer in comparison to London. On this side of the pond we have Topshop, Miss Selfridge and New Look - high street chains that offer directional, trend-focused fashion, that is as affordable as it is disposable. Even style icons such as Kate Moss and Siena Miller don British high street brands, albeit mixed with designer, couture and vintage.

But France has caught on, and is producing affordable fashion that is quickly making its way to our shops. Brands such as Petit Bateau, APC, Vanessa Bruno and Compoir des Cotonniers are being hailed by the British press as basic chic, where you can find the perfect knit, skinny trouser, paired-down tailoring, or a floaty dress for a fraction of luxury design prices, but with all the kudos and fashionability in tact. And more importantly, they're all available in England.

Comptoir des Cotonniers are so confident of the British market, they are planning further locations in addition to their new flagship in Westbourne Grove. The label, which in France caters to real women of all ages, offers fuss-free fashion, but enough on trend to give our high street a run for its money. Floaty dresses are sexy, but not mumsy, striped jersey is great for layering and sleek trousers come in skinny and wider fits.

APC is also at the forefront of high street fashion this season. Their minimal streetwear has an edgy, utilitarian feel, which is right on trend and they have some of the best jeans available. In addition to their own stores, the line is available at department stores such as Selfridges and Liberty, who stock a great selection of their denim, knits and tailoring.

So these days you don't need to cross the Channel for affordable sophistication. Whilst the Gap may be great for basics and Zara for catwalk knock-offs, it's the French high street that is perfect for finding something a little more special and it's available right on your doorstep.
