Clothing sales up 7.4 percent in September

Textile, clothing and footwear sales increased 7.4 percent year-on-year in September, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Overall, retail sales increased by 6.5 percent for September, showing that the retail industry is continuing to show growth for the 29th consecutive month. Average store prices, including petrol, fell by 3.6 percent, compared with this time last year, while volume bought was up 0.9 percent.

In addition, the amount spent increased by 2.7 percent in September, compared with September 2014, and by 1.4 percent from August 2015.

Online sales of textiles, clothing and footwear increased by 10.9 percent, accounting for 12.8 percent of total sales made online.

The figures, which cover the period August 30 to October 3, were boosted by the inclusion of the late bank holiday.
