With New York Fashion Week in full swing, Pantone, the global authority on colour, has unveiled that Autumn/Winter 2014 will showcase a season of “untypical colours” from exotic shades of red to subtle blues and enhanced autumnal hues. The bi-annual colour report states that for AW14,

designers have been inspired by everything from books, artisan crafts, photography and retro architecture to exotic landscapes and the children of rock legends, and this seasons colours break free from traditional autumnal hues in favour of more adventurous shades, identified by Pantone as colours that “transcends time and place”.

“This is

a season of untypical colours—more reflective of the imagination and ingenuity, which makes for an artful collection of colours and combinations not bound by the usual hues for fall,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “There is a certain mystique that is reflected throughout the palette, inspired by the increasing need for people everywhere to create an individual imprint.”

The top ten colours for women’s fashion features colours that represent the beauty of the past and the spirit of the present and includes “grown-up” shades of red, followed by two extremes of the purple family, from a romantic and elegant purple hue to this year’s colour of the year ‘Radiant Orchid’. These are joined by subtle blue tones, a “powerful” green hue, and two optimistic autumnal shades from a classy brown to a warm yellow that alludes to the promise of spring to come.

According to Pantone, the exotic red ‘Sangria’, the more sophisticated ‘Aurora Red’ and the adaptable ‘Radiant Orchid’ will be the most popular, across not just women’s fashion but also men’s, along with ‘Mauve Mist’, a romantic and elegant purple shade, inspired by the deco era that has a touch of Downton Abbey about it.

The berry-hue of ‘Sangria’ can be seen across the collections of Monique Lhuillier, Nicole Miller, Dennis Basso, and Tadashi Shoji, who noted that he uses colour in his collections to “reinvent classic silhouettes” and he used the bold colour on his little red dress.
