The search is on for the UK’s best small shop, as the All Party Parliamentary Small Shops Group confirms its Best Small Shops competition is returning after a four year hiatus.

Administer by the Independent Retailers Confederation, the competition aims to bring small retailers to the attention of parliamentarians and the local community, and is open to all ‘small shops’ from independents to specialist retailers, whether selling goods or services in the UK.

Sponsored by PayPoint and Tictail, the competition uses a range of criteria to select the best small shop including innovation within the business, engagement with the community and entrepreneurial activities.

Small shops have until January 30 to enter, with shortlisted small shops being informed on February 16, before the eventual winner is announced at a special awards reception at the House of Commons on February 25.

Simon Danczuk MP, chair of the All Party Parliamentary Small Shops Group, said: “I am delighted to be holding the Best Small Shop Competition again this year. Small shops really are the backbone of Britain, providing essential services for local people and creating jobs in their communities.

“I think it is right that Parliament acknowledges the vital role small shops play and seeks to recognise and reward the very best small shops across the country.”
