Ron Johnson, former Apple executive and brand new member to Nasty Gal’s board of directors, has made a 16 million dollars investment in the retailer. Johnson is an old acquaintance of the retailer’s new CEO, Sheree Waterson.

As broke by ‘RE/Code’, the LA-based fashion retailer counts with a new and powerful ally: former Apple and JC Penney executive Ron Johnson.

The entrepreneur, who is preparing to launch his own start up Enjoy, has led the 16 million dollars’ worth of Series C round for Los Angeles-based Nasty Gal, the company founded by Sophia Amoruso.

This funding adds to those 40 million dollars fundraised by Amoruso back in 2012. Existing investor Index Ventures, which provided a good deal of that investment three years ago, also participated.

As published by ‘RE/Code’, Nasty Gal confirmed the news earlier this week, saying that after setting in well with its first retail store in Los Angeles and with another one coming soon in Santa Monica, they started to look for an investor. "We don't have an aggressive rollout planned," Amoruso (one of the honorees in the inaugural Upstart 100) said. "We want to get another one open, learn a lot and then hopefully destroy everyone."

"Ron was always my first choice," Amoruso told the Californian publication, explaining her choice of venture partner.

Other board members are Waterson, Amoruso and Danny Rimer of existing investor Index Ventures.

Nasty Gal has raised 65 million dollars to date.
