Sheffield-based shopping centre Meadowhall is celebrating its 25th birthday this year with a 50 million pound refurbishment plan, British Land has confirmed.

The revamp of the Yorkshire shopping centre will start in autumn 2015 and will be completed by the end of 2017, and will create distinct districts within the centre, as well as enable a number of retailers to install double height shop fronts.

Meadowhall is the fourth-largest regional shopping centre in the UK and currently houses 310 shops, and recently the centre secured new lettings with footwear retailer Size?, Liam Gallagher's fashion brand Pretty Green, Cadenzza, and Lola and Grace.

The refurbishment will mostly take place out of hours, so not to disrupt trade, and will include new way finding, mall seating and lighting as well as the installation of lighting artwork.

Claire Barber, head of shopping centre asset management for British Land, said: "Across the retail portfolio, we are investing in our assets to ensure they reflect the way people shop today. The refurbishment of Meadowhall will reposition the centre to appeal to premium and lifestyle retailers as well as a broader range of customers. We are very excited about the future for Meadowhall and the experience this investment will create for both our customers and retailers."

This investment follows the 3 million pound refresh of the Park Lane area of Meadowhall that recently welcomed a number of new retailers including The White Company, Jigsaw and White Stuff.

Over the past 25 years, Meadowhall has been visited by almost 610 million customers.
