Marks & Spencer will report optimistic sales figures after it saw improvements

in figures this week.

The report will raise hopes that the worst of the conditions on the high street might be coming to an end and confirming recent data that the consumer economy is showing signs of life.

It is also likely to suggest it can increase its profits this year by about £50m as it revamps its stores.

M&S is Britain's biggest clothing retailer and is expected to report that like-for-like sales of what it calls general merchandise – including its all important womenswear – has increased by 0.2pc, according to a poll of 10 analysts. This would be a small but significant improvement on the fall of 1.8pc during the third quarter.
