Ottavio Missoni, founder of the luxury Italian knitwear house, has died. Missoni,

who along with his wife Rosita, started the company in 1953, which is best-known for its colourful knitwear designs and zig zag motifs.

The company is run by Rosita and two children, Angela Missoni, the company's creative director, and Luca Missoni, the company's marketing manager.

In a release, the family stated: “Mr. Missoni died peacefully at his home in Sumirago” and “the date and time of the funeral will be announced shortly.”

The designer left the Circolo hospital in Varese on May 1, after being taken ill at his home in Sumirago, in the province of Varese, where the brand’s headquarters and factory is located.

The passing of Ottavio comes at a difficult time after his son, Vittorio, went missing in a plane off the coast of Venezuela after his Christmas holiday.
