Selfridges target of 'smash and grab'

Luxury department store Selfridges was the target

of 'smash and grab' thieves on Thursday, as a gang of robbers caused havoc on the ground floor.

A group of masked robbers carrying axes made their way into Selfridges' busy jewellery department during opening hours and smashed glass cabinets and stole watches, accessories and jewellery from the Oxford Street brand.

Two men attempted to flee the scene on a moped but crashed, spilling watches from a bag onto the road, reported the Daily Mail.

One of them tried to run off but was detained by a member of the public until police arrived to arrest him. The other was taken to hospital suffering from minor injuries.
