Harvey Nichols today confirmed the departure of its fashion

director was not linked to the fur controversy.

Paula Reed, who took up the role just one year ago, was thought to have left due to pressure from Peta.

Reed stepped down from her role on Friday afternoon and following an official announcement about her departure, Peta sent out its own statement implying, but not explicitly stating, that she had left as a result of a campaign in which 5,000 people emailed Harvey Nichols to complain about it selling fur.

Reed had been “solely responsible" for the decision to do so, breaking the department store’s decade-long ban.

However a source close to the company told Drapers that the two were not related. On Wednesday, chief executive Joseph Wan issued a statement confirming that.

“There was neither a causal link nor indeed any connection between the change in the company’s fur policy and the resignation of its fashion director Paula Reed," he said.
