Department store chain Harvey Nichols is in talks

to open its first mainland department store in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

According to dutch newspaper the Parool, property investment group Emmes who is in charge of developing the Marks & Spencer department store on the Rokin, is in discussion with Harvey Nichols about the adjacent property. Marks & Spencer is set to open a three-story department store on Rokin 21 in 2015.

Martin Smit, owner of Emmes told the newspapers that the two were “still in talks” but “heading in the right direction.” If Harvey Nichols does open a department store on Rokin 49, it could pose a serious threat for premium dutch department store de Bijenkorf, which was acquired by the Selfridge Group in 2011.

The website Harveynichols.nl has been registered by Emmes Group and the website's welcoming page currently states: 'Amsterdam Opening 2016.'

Harvey Nichols currently has stores in London, Leeds, Liverpool, Bristol, Dublin, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh, with overseas branches in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and Kuwait.
