'Rabbits' to protest against the Angora fur trade on Oxford Street

Animal rights group Peta is staging a protest today at the

Corner of Argyll street and Oxford street against products containing Angora wool. Giant 'rabbits' will gather and be holding signs stating “angora hurts rabbits,” spreading the word to Christmas shoppers about the cruelty behind angora farming.

The animal's right group previously released a video containing undercover footage of angora fur farms in China, which shown workers tying rabbits down while ripping their fur out. Several fashion retailers were quick to the respond to the shocking video and halted the sourcing and production of items containing angora wool.

Peta's Ben Williamson says that the group is “pleased that companies – including Marks & Spencer, Next, H&M and others – have halted the production of angora products or have committed to banning them in the future.” But, he points out that consumers are “angry” that certain retailers still continue to “sell off their current stocks of cruelly produced angora.” Williamson adds “We need them to pull the cruel angora products off the shelves today.”

“Peta is appealing to shoppers this holiday season,” says Peta's Kirsty Henderson. “Please take the time to read the label on that sweater or scarf. If it says 'angora', remember the gentle rabbits whose fur was cruelly ripped out of their skin – and leave the item on the shelf.”
