The British Retail Consortium announced the appointment of Sir Charlie

Mayfield, chairman of the John Lewis Partnership longstanding members of the BRC, as company chair. He is set to take the helm of the trade association this fall, after beginning his term of office as vice chair in May.

Helen Dickinson, director general, commented on his appointment: "We're extremely pleased that Charlie is to become our new Chair. The experience and leadership he brings will be essential as we continue to represent retail at its best."

Sir Mayfield will be succeeding Sir Ian Cheshire, who will be stepping down from his role at the end of September, after serving a two year term. In 2000, Sir Mayfield joined the JL Partnership as head of business development and been chairman of the JL Partnership since 2007. He is also currently chairman of the UK Commission for Employment and skills.

Sir Ian Cheshire said: "It will be a pleasure to hand the Chairmanship of the BRC to Charlie. We are living through a period of profound political and economic change and no one is better placed to take the BRC forward."

"I am very much looking forward to working with Ian for the next six months and then chairing the BRC as we continue to modernise and campaign on behalf of the whole industry," added Sir Mayfield on his new role. "Building on the great work the BRC has led over recent years, it is critical that we continue to have a strong and effective trade association to galvanise retail employers and attract the very best new talent from across society into retail."
