Tamara Mellon, the Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Jimmy

Choo, has been appointed Business Ambassador for Britain by the Prime Minister David Cameron as part of his plans to boost the UK economy by opening new markets, increasing trade and encouraging investment.

Handbag designer Anya Hindmarch has also been appointed Business Ambassador, alongside Mellon, to promote the UK abroad.

The Prime Minister said in a statement: “…I am determined to pursue with zeal every opportunity to further British business success. Our British ambassadors will be at the forefront of this; there can be no better champion for British business than them.”

The new appointment comes a month after Mellon was awarded an OBE for services to the fashion industry. Commenting on her new appointment, Mellon said: "I am honoured to represent Britain in this way. It is an immense privilege. Our country has always been a great trading nation and remains a centre of creativity, talent and innovation. I welcome David Cameron's focus on growing the economy by increasing overseas trade and I will do everything I can to promote British business abroad."
