The high street benefits from colder weather, as the drop in temperature increases sales of winter fashion and accessories. John Lewis in particular saw its online sales boost last week, up an estimated 40% over last year. John Lewis Director of

Operation Development Lesley Ballantyne reported trade increased 7.2 per cent up and Peter Jones department store recorded an increase of 9 per cent.

A seasonal feel is evident in shops as Visual Merchandising teams across the country brought Christmas to life through windows and interior decoration. Customers were clearly inspired to buy, Ballantyne sated, sales in Christmas trees and Christmas shop merchandise were well ahead of last year.

Warm
weather merchandise sales are growing, with boots and cashmere attracting attention. A newly refurbished womenswear department opened in Edinburgh to very positive comments from customers.

Menswear continued its consistently excellent form, recording an increase of 13 per cent for the second week in a row. Women’s accessories sales were boosted by handbags: new brands tempted customers to buy.

In the EHT directorate, sales were very strong in large electrical and IT helped by an excellent range of laptops with good stock levels supporting sales.

Johnlewis.com sales were in great form: +40 per cent on last year. Branches continue to support online sales through Partner assisted customer transactions (PACT) and Click & Collect from shops.

The week ahead sees trade last year lift towards the Christmas peak and with stocks of seasonal merchandise in good supply, we are well placed to take advantage of the colder weather that has been forecast for the coming week.
