The annual awards celebrate “cutting-edge innovation and original talent” and name the best across seven categories: architecture, digital, fashion, furniture, graphic, product and transport design. The seven winning names will now compete for the overall Design of the Year accolade, which will be announced at an award ceremony on June 30. All of the 69 nominated designs are on display in the Design Museum until August 30 and visitors can vote for their favourite.
Prada’s SS14 collection wins Design of the Year fashion award
Prada’s bold collection will be up against the Heydar Aliyev Center in Azerbaijan, the smartphone-based Portable Eye Examination Kit system, the ergonomically designed Pro Chair Family, the Drone Shadows, a series of installations consisting of a 1:1 outline of a military unmanned Drone, as well as the Seaboard Grand piano keyboard, and the Volkswagen designed XL1 Car.
Gemma Curtin, curator of Designs of the Year, said: “From the daringly innovative to the reassuringly good, Designs of the Year 2014 is a condensed and vivid selection of the last twelve months in design. This spectrum of expert-chosen design is an insight into what design can do for us both as individuals and as a society.”
Last year the Gov.UK website took the Design of the Year prize, while fashion category was won by the 'Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel' documentary.
