GFW 2013 kicks off and first award winners unveiled

This year’s Graduate Fashion Week kicked off in London over the weekend, and day one saw the first winner’s unveiled, under the new revamped format that will see the awards staggered out across the four-day showcase.



Announced by Hilary Alexander, the first GFW award ceremony saw Amy Davidson from Manchester School of Art pick up the Mulberry Accessories Award, while Rosy Dobby from Northumbria University was crowned the winner of the Ethical Award.

Davidson
won the prestigious Mulberry Accessories category after impressing judges with her “attention detail”, and fashion designers Lydia Rees from Middlesex University and Jessica Chapman from De Montfort University were named runners-up.

In the ethical category, presented by Ben Ramsden of the charity Pants for Poverty, Dobby was praised for her “coherent collection designed with an intimate knowledge of the customer and created a brand new subset of sportswear”.

Runners-up for the ethical award were Annest Gwynedd from Middlesex University and Rebecca Horner also from Northumbria University.

The final award presented on day one was presented by GFW sponsor George at Asda, who named Chloe Wilson from Northumbria University as the Disney Design Competition winner. Wilson won 2,000 pounds towards her education and will receive a one-year work placement with the George design team.

In addition to crowning award winner’s the first day also showcased final-year collections from Bournemouth, Central Lancashire, Edinburgh, Northumbria, Northbrook, and Wiltshire. As well as industry talks from London Fashion Week designer Henry Holland and Karen Millen.

Graduate Fashion Week continues today with the International Catwalk Show, and final-year collections from Liverpool John Moores, Rochester, Ravensbourne, Nottingham Trent, De Montfort and Epsom.

The four-day showcase ends with the Gala Awards, on Wednesday night, when the Gold Award will be presented to the student with the best collection of the year.
