The Office for National Statistics has listed a series of measures for monitoring and evaluating e-commerce performance in the UK In its latest digital report, the ONS found almost half of all UK adults have bought clothing online in 2014, making it the most popular category for online shopping

in the country.

74% of all UK adults shop online

Figures show that 74 percent of all adults have used the internet to shop in 2014, up from 53 percent in 2008, with 49 percent of people buying clothing.

Those aged 25-34 are most likely to buy clothes online, with 64 percent having done so this year, while 52 percent of all women bought clothes online in 2014 compared to 46 percent of men.

There has also been a significant rise in the amount of older people taking advantage of online retail. In 2008 it was estimated that 16% of those 65 and over bought online, but for this year that figure now stands at 40 percent.

The figures also show that access to the internet using a mobile phone more than doubled between 2010 and 2014, growing from 24 percent to 58 percent.

One of the important economic trends over the last 10 years has been the increased use of e-commerce, by consumers and businesses alike. In 2014, as the consequence of a 2013 European Union e-commerce taskforce, the Office for National Statistics began a project to consider how it could contribute to the monitoring of e-commerce nationally.
