London Fashion Week failed to prevent fashion sales from falling on the UK high street in September, according to accountancy firm BDO. The British Fashion Council, in its commitment to developing growth, sent an open letter to the Evening Standard

ahead of London Fashion Week, to ask residents to make the streets of London the best catwalk showcase in the world.

But
sales of fashion fell 2.1 percent in September over last year, the fifth consecutive monthly fall, the report said.

According to the BDO September was a particularly “challenging" month for fashion retailers as the unseasonably warm weather dampened appetite for autumn and winter collections.

Fashion sales rose during LFW but dropped after

Fashion sales rose 5.2 percent and 5.3 percent in weeks two and three, respectively, but fell 7.1 percent in the first week and 3 percent in the fourth.

Overall, high street same-store sales edged up 0.6 percent in September, although growth was substantially less than the 3.5 percent recorded in August, BDO noted.

It said the August result was “unusually strong" and September’s figures showed a “good overall performance".

Don Williams, national head of retail and wholesale at BDO, told The Times online September’s fashion sales were against a strong performance last year when the colder weather increased purchases of coats and boots.

He said London Fashion Week had lifted sales for a fortnight: “It puts fashion in the news, raises people’s awareness and stimulates their psychology. And they say right I want to go and have a look."

In related news, UK retail sales grew 2.8 percent year-on-year in September, according to monthly research from MasterCard, which tracks spending on credit cards and other forms of payment such as cash and cheques.
