The total UK retail sales improved in 1.9 percent in January, accounting as the largest year-on-year rise since December 2011. According to the British Retail Consortium (BRC), sales were boosted by growing shopping on

tablets and smart phones.

UK retail
sales values were up 1.9 percent on a like-for-like basis from January 2012, when they were down 0.3 percent on the preceding year. On a total basis, sales were up 3.0 percent, against a 2.1 percent rise in January 2012. This is the highest total sales growth since September 2012 and like-for-like sales growth for 13 months.

These are some of the main highlights of the BRC-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor January 2013, published Tuesday.

Digital shopping also experienced a positive start in 2013, as online sales were up 10.1 percent over January 2012, when they had risen by 11.3 percent. The Director General of the BRC, Helen Dickinson said Tuesday that "recovering consumer confidence" added up to "a more successful January than we saw last year".

Retail sales grew at their fastest rate in 13 months in January despite heavy snow across the country, the latest figures have revealed.

"These factors, coupled with recovering consumer confidence, have added up to a more successful January than we saw last year." She added that although the snow hit sales, its impact was limited and did not cancel out the month's otherwise high sales.

January has proved to be a good month for the majority of British fashion retailers, which posted record sales. John Lewis, House of Fraser, Next, Debenhams, Burberry and New Look have been keen on looking at the coming months with greater optimism after quite a strong Christmas sales period.
