Somewhere between Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring and a 1950s housewife we find inspiration in the Raf Simon's SS12 collection for Jil Sander. Starched white shirt dresses and tops came demurely layered, with a clever play on transparency, paired with thinly veiled hats and opulent earrings.

“Midcentury modernism — the mentality as well as the aesthetic,” is how Mr. Simons explained his vision behind the collection backstage. The designer's penchant for streamlined clothes also came in pastel paisley dresses, drawn in a straight line to below the knee, but with subtle slits at the back or winking with sparkly brooches.

A Picasso inspired print was juxtaposed on t-shirting and light knitwear.
