Chanel, the French privately owned luxury brand has

obtained its first tannery, its long-term provider of lamb skin, Bodin-Joyeux in central France.

According to Reuters, Chanel acquired the tannery and other manufacturing partners to assure the abiding quality and secure its supply chain for all products. By purchasing the tannery, Chanel can now control the path the raw hide makes from the factory to the store display cases, which gives the luxury brand an edge and helps Chanel strengthen its image as a distinctive and exclusive label.

The French luxury fashion brand currently owns a number of its production suppliers, including embroiders Lesage, hat maker Maison Michel, feather expert Lemarie, glove crafter Causse and Scottish cashmere firm Barrie Knitwear.

Chanel is currently owned by the Wertheimer family and with close to 6 billion euros in estimated annual sales, it is the second largest luxury brand in the world.
