With a hike in cotton and silk prices, import duties and VAT it is no wonder clothing and
footwear prices rose 2% in November. This is the highest rise since records began, contributing to a record rise in overall inflation during the month.
Clothing prices rose at 11.3% on an annual basis, the highest level since 1980. Clothing price rises were driven by men’s outerwear during the bad weather.
The rises herald the end of more than a decade of deflation in clothing.
The overall Consumer Prices Index was up by 3.3% during the month and compared to a 3.2% rise in October, the Office for National Statistics reported.
