This past winter edition the visitor profile at the

Copenhagen Fashion Week was perhaps more international than ever. In particular, emerging markets like China, Japan and Russia were notably well-represented and that trend seems only to be growing. And that is with good reason…the plans are far-reaching; Copenhagen is developing more and more into the fashion gateway to China.

Emerging markets

China; a gigantic market and a great dream for almost every fashion label with ambitions ‘to make it big’. It is a growing market where the sky really is the limit, but…not an easy market to penetrate. In fact, according to Gallery CEO Christian Gregersen, 95% of European brands don’t stand a chance without a Chinese partner (or partners) who can mediate through the differences in cultural and trading mentalities. That is why the organisers of the Copenhagen Fashion Week have decided to forge a bridge between the two worlds. The fashion city has the ambition of becoming the Chinese Culture City of Europe.

Chinese Culture City

And why not? Copenhagen seems to be the appropriate city for this noble mission. Not only because the city is the most conveniently positioned geographically in relation to China (distance and accessibility; three flights a day depart to the main Chinese cities), but also because the knowledge is present, many important contacts have been established and, in particular, the number of Chinese buyers has been increasing every year. It has ‘clicked’, and the first significant steps have been taken. Gallery is opening a Danish office in Shanghai and a Chinese office in Copenhagen. Since the issues facing Europeans when entering China naturally apply the other way round as well…

Chinese New Year

The absolute kick-off of ‘Copenhagen Chinese Culture City’ will take place on January 31, 2014 when the grand Chinese New Year celebrations take place in the Danish capital. It promises to be an extravaganza, so if you can already find cheap tickets…don’t hesitate!

In the meantime … stay tuned. There are wonderful things in store!
