Department store chain Debenhams is to anchor the 30 million pound redevelopment of the

Mander shopping centre in Wolverhampton.

The retailer will take a 93,000 square foot, three-level store in the newly built section of the centre, which will connect the lower mall, upper mall and car park levels of the existing scheme. The store is scheduled to open in 2017.

“We are delighted to bring Debenhams and its Designers to Wolverhampton,” said Gareth Dougherty, acquisitions manager at Debenhams. “Alongside robust growth in our multi-channel offering, we believe combining the refurbishment exercise with a new Debenhams department store will greatly enhance the shopping experience for the people of Wolverhampton.”

The redevelopment of the centre will also create a further 10 large retail units, including three new stores of between 17,000 and 26,000 square foot, which the centre’s owner, Mander Investments hopes will “encourage other major retail brands to invest in the city”.

Further works include the reconfigure the internal circulation of the centre, such as new escalators, new and relocating lifts to the car park.

The centre’s existing retailers including BHS, New Look, and Deichmann will continue to trade as normal during the proposed works.
