A shopper who purchased a summer dress from Primark was shocked when she discovered a hand stitched label sewn
inside the garment reading: “Forced to work exhausting hours.”Rebecca Gallagher was shopping at her local Primark in Swansea and bought a floral, summery dress for ten pounds. However once she return home, she discovered the alarming label stitched in with washing instructions. “I was amazed when I checked for the washing instructions and spotted this label,” revealed Gallagher to the South Wales Evening Post.
“To be honest I've never really thought much about how the clothes are made. But this really made me think about how we get our cheap fashion. I dread to think that my summer top may be made by some exhausted person toiling away for hours in some sweatshop abroad.”
Gallagher adds that she attempted to contact Primark, but was placed on hold for 15 minutes before her call was cut off. The shopper worries that the label could be a desperate “cry for help — to let us people in Britain know what is going on,” although tracing the label's origin will not be an easy task.
The label may have been sewn by a suffering factory employee, however the label could also have been stitched once the dress arrived in the UK, prior to being shipped to the value's retailers store. A company spokesman added that there have been “no other incidents of this kind” in regards to the label found in the dress.
“We would be grateful if the customer would give us the dress, so we can investigate how the additional label became attached and whether there are issues which need to be looked into.”
