Online retailer giant eBay Inc. announced on Wednesday that it had acquired PhiSix, a computer graphics

company to enhance its virtual fitting techniques.

In order to make online fitting more realistic for its users, PhiSix develops 3D models of garments from photographs, pattern files and other external sources and creates a visualization of the clothing, simulating how the items behave when worn. PhiSix's technology is also able to recommend a size for a consumers virtual body based on basic measurement inputs.

eBay Inc. believes that PhiSix technology has “exciting possibilities” for the future of online shopping, as well as offline shopping, as it lets consumers see how certain clothes fit, move and look in different environments without having to physically try them on. The company's technology can also be used for omni-channel commerce, so consumers can shop from any chosen device.

“PhiSix’s technology enables consumers to understand the fit and movement of clothes in an online shopping environment,” commented Steve Yankovich, vice president of innovation and new ventures of eBay Inc. “Consumers can experience the merchandise in a more efficient and impactful way, which we believe will drive sales for retailers and create a delightful experience for shoppers.”

Founded in 2012 by Jonathan Su, a former Intel research scientist who has a background in special effects, PhiSix's team of four will be joining eBay Inc.'s team as part of the acquisition and will continue to work together to create new innovations for retail.

“This is an exciting opportunity for us to bring PhiSix’s expertise to one of the world’s leading commerce platforms,” stated Su. “We believe today’s acquisition will help us better scale our expertise and meet the needs of digitally-minded shoppers and create new customer experiences for the eBay Inc. portfolio.”
