eBay victim of cyber attack

EBay has been the victim of a cyber attack and has asked its 150 million users to reset their passwords.

The internet giant, which hosts many online fashion boutiques and retail businesses, said hackers had found a way to access passwords, telephone numbers and other personal data from its website.

An investigation into the attack showed “no evidence” that hackers breached the group’s PayPal online payment service, the company said, with PayPal customer data stored and encrypted separately from eBay customer data.

The eBay database that hackers accessed also contained no financial information on customers, such as credit card numbers, the company said in a statement.

The attack against eBay is the latest in a growing number of successful cyber security breaches at popular retailers and online sites, from Target to Yahoo’s email service.
