Fashion designers Stella McCartney and Victoria
Beckham, Net-a-Porter’s Natalie Massenet, Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman, and Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts have been named as some of the UK’s most powerful women in BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour’s ‘Power List’.The inaugural list, which ranks the 100 women who have the most impact on the country’s economy, culture, politics and society, is ranked only from one to 20, after which those included are alphabetically.
Topping the list is the Queen, followed by Home Secretary Theresa May in second place and Santander CEO Ana Botin at number three. The only fashion name to make the top 20 was Burberry’s Ahrendts, ranked at number nine.
Outside of the top 20, both McCartney and Beckham were recognised for their influence in the fashion industry, while Massenet is noted for her founding of luxury online retailer Net-A-Porter.com, as well as being chairman of the British Fashion Council, and Shulman was credited for heading up the UK’s most recognisable fashion publication.
Other names featured include Marks & Spencer ambassador and actress Joanna Lumley, The White Company founder Chrissie Rucker and artist Tracey Emin.
