The co-founder of British heritage clothing brand Henri Lloyd, Henry Strzelecki,

better known as Mr Henri, has died aged 87.

Polish-born Strzelecki, who launched the clothing label in the 1963 with business partner Angus Lloyd, was said to have “sailed away peacefully” on Boxing Day. He is survived by his sons, Paul and Martin, who are the joint chief executives of Henri-Lloyd Limited, plus a daughter, Diane, as well as eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Touted as a visionary, he was responsible for producing sportswear that was more durable, from hand-taping of the seams to prevent leakage to the development of non-corrosive nylon zips with the Swiss firm of Riri, and in 1985 he was awarded an MBE for his services to the clothing industry.

On the company’s website the brand said: “The spirit of “Henri” Strzelecki lives on in the tradition of his business – one, whose products are appreciated by all who now go properly clothed for their leisure pursuits.” The brand has also launched a virtual remembrance page to honour Strzelecki, where people can add their memories.
