Birger and Tiger of Sweden, has joined the likes of LVMH, Burberry and Mulberry in becoming part of the Leather Working Group (LWG), to work together on developing feasible solutions to the environmental challenges that occur within the leather supply chain.IC Company states that they are aware of the harmful chemicals used in tanneries to prepare raw hide and the difficulties in assuring the sustainability of the leather supply chain and therefore has decided to join the LWG, a multi-stakeholder group whose aim is to develop and maintain a sustainable protocol for all business practices that work within the leather industry.
“We believe that a membership of The Leather Working Group will help us create a more transparent leather supply chain,” said IC Companys in a press statement released on Monday.
“We are working with our suppliers to ensure that they will approach their tanneries and urge them to become members of Leather Working Group. The membership will, after training & audits, result in a grading system according to the level of compliance.”
Membership to the LWG will also let LWG rate the traceability of the raw hide or skin used to make their product.
“Our membership of the Leather Working Group is another step in our quest to find solutions and through cooperation to achieve industry leverage,” added IC Companys, which is currently part of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, the Danish Ethical Trading Initiative, the Business Social Compliance Initiative and the Kemikaliegruppen.
