The UK’s largest inner-city shopping centre, Manchester

Arndale, has beaten its best-ever footfall figures for a Saturday with more than 232,000 shoppers visiting the centre on December 3.

The centre recorded an increase of 10.2% year-on-year on last Saturday’s figures. This is in contrast to the North West region as a whole, which recorded a decline of -4.9%. The total footfall at Manchester Arndale last week exceeded over an impressive one million shoppers.

The centre is now on course to beat its 39 million customers footfall record of last year and current predictions look like it will achieve 40 million by the end of 2011.

David Allinson, the new Centre Director at Manchester Arndale said: “Many have predicted a challenging Christmas for retail this year but we are currently performing well. Our flagship stores, recent new retailer additions and our creative marketing campaigns have all helped strengthen the shopping proposition for Manchester Arndale, especially in the run-up to the festive period.

“We remain hopeful that we will break our all-time record for yearly footfall figures by the end of December.”

Manchester Arndale, which is jointly owned by Prudential and Capital Shopping Centres and managed by Prupim, has more than 240 stores.
