Carl Dawson, Tesco's chief information officer for internet retailing, has been tapped by

department store group Marks & Spencers as its new IT director.

Dawson is set to oversee all M&S online digitals projects, as the group renews its systems to improve its e-commerce. He will report to the group's chief finance officer, Paul Friston, who holds the position on an interim basis, after Alan Stewart left his former role and to join the board at Tesco as non-executive director.

“Carl has a wealth of IT experience from the retail industry and joins us from Tesco,” commented M&S chief executive Marc Bolland in an internal announcement according to Retail Week. “Prior to this, Carl has held chief information officer positions at both Shop Direct and Thomas Cook. His start date will be announced in due course.”

Clifford Cohen, who is currently M&S's head of businesses solutions for M&S.com will become the group IT director on interim basis until Dawson takes on his new role. “Clifford has extensive M&S experience and played a critical role in the successful launch of the new M&S.com platform,” added Bolland.
