Discount retailer, Matalan, will be creating an extra 2,300 Christmas jobs across its 208 UK

stores to cope with demand.

Coming at a time of mass unemployment for the young UK generation – the Office for National Statistics shows that one in five young are without a job - the retailer’s stated commitment to turn these temporary roles into permanent positions wherever possible will be welcome news for the economy.

Other retailers to have already announced their Christmas employment plans include Argos and Asda, which expect to employ 12,000 and 7,000 extra staff respectively in order to deal with the busiest part of the year for British retail.

Mike Jeans, Retail Director at Matalan, said: “We are pleased to be announcing the creation of 2,300 jobs throughout the country during the Christmas period.
“We are looking for sales assistants who focus on making sure every potential Christmas present is on the sales floor, who love to work in a busy environment, but above all else, those who strive to keep our customers smiling.”

Adding to the workforce appears to be one way the retailer is looking to develop the business in the year ahead.
Jeans added: “We are looking forward to welcoming new colleagues to help Matalan grow.”
