Italian luxury brand Max Mara has teamed up with yarn manufacturer Saluzzo Yarns to introduce a sustainable
collection made from recycled plastic bottles. The Max Mara Weekend line will debut for spring 14 and features “practical and stylist” outfits using the new technology advanced NewLife yarn, which has been created by converting recycled plastic bottles in Italy into a polyester yarn.
The process is all collected in an environmentally friendly manner as it is mechanical rather than chemical, and as it is entirely made in Italy it means that the collection conserves water and energy resources as well as a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, as part of Max Mara’s continuing commitment to sustainability.
"We are very satisfied with this project, which is innovative, responsible, fashionable and proudly Italian,” Max Mara Group's fashion director Laura Lusuardi told WWD.
Launching In January 2014, highlights from the collection includes a flared trench coat, a boxy collarless jacket, a T-shirt and a pencil skirt, all of which feature a jacquard houndstooth pattern. Retail prices range from 200 to 700 US dollars and will be available in 1,500 stores in 50 countries.
