In Interbrand's annual Best Global Brand reports, published on Thursday, there is little sign of the luxury companies

or fashion's household names.

Despite all their advertising prowess and visibility, the world's most successful brands are tech companies, with Apple in the number one spot. Google, IBM and Microsoft are all in the top 5.

Louis Vuitton comes in at number 19, followed by H&M at 21. The companies are valued 22.55 billion dollars and 21.08 billion dollars respectively.

Hermès, whose brand is worth 18 percent more than it was a year ago at 8.98 billion dollars, came in at number 46 in the rankings, followed by Cartier, at 58, Prada at 70 and Tiffany's at 71.

Interbrand bases a brand’s value on a number of factors: the financial performance of its products or services, the role the brand plays in influencing consumer choice; and the strength it has to command a premium price, or secure earnings for the company.
