US fashion retailer Opening Ceremony has teamed up with one of the world's largest chip makers, Intel, to launch a collection of stylish “smart”
wearables. The collaboration, which is better known as 'My Intelligent Communication Accessory', or MICA, currently consists of a bracelet available in two styles: black snakeskin with pearls and lapis stones and white snakeskin with tiger’s eye and obsidian.
Both styles feature a curved screen on the inside of the wrist, which could mean that the bracelet also functions as a watch - however the companies have decided to remain silent on what technological capabilities the bracelet actually offers.
“We're not going too much into detail before the product is actually on the market,” said Aysegul Ildeniz, vice president and general manager for business development and strategy, at Intel to WWD. “But what I can say is we’re calling it a communications accessory. It’s intended to enable you to be connected at all times, through social feeds.”
According to WWD, the bracelet is able to function without being connected to a mobile device and will be offered exclusively at Barney's department store in New York and Opening Ceremony in time for the holiday season.
The retail price for the bracelet has yet to be announced, but Opening Ceremony's founder Humberto Leon said it will be available for “under one thousand dollars”.
