Selfridges to revamp its Oxford Street Store

British department store Selfridges has hired engineer Expedition, architecture consulting firm Gensler and

construction manager Blue Sky Building to develop plans for a 10 million pound overhaul of its Oxford Street flagship store in London.

Plans for the renovated store are said to develop more retail space in the existing building by merging the historical front facade of the store and the extension built behind it at a later phase, according to Building.

Blueprints for the building changes include the construction of a store entrance on Duke Street and an underground tunnel which is said to connect the store with the office building behind Selfridges. The department store is also rumored to be making space for a “high profile brand” on its ground floor.

The Selfridges flagship store was originally designed by American architect Daniel Burnham and opened in 1909 as the second largest retail location in UK, after Harrods.
