Value retailers and discount stores continue to draw in shoppers who are favouring cheaper goods from the big high street giants.

According to the latest figures from Barclaycard, consumer spending at discount groups rose 23 percent in May on the same month a year before.

The number reveals the challenge faced by bigger supermarkets and department stores.

Barclaycard does not reveal which firms are in its discount category, but they are likely to include TK Maxx and larger ‘pound shop’ groups.
