Science and fashion might have found each other in a new spray-on fabric by Fabrican. The instant

material from an aerosol can is invented by the Department of Chemical Engineering, a research group that’s working on the technology. The material promises to have potential applications for the medical, transport and chemical industries.

Academic Visitor at Imperial, Dr Manel Torres joined the Royal College of Art with the intention of developing a spray-on fabric from an aerosol can. The Spanish fashion designer leads the interdisciplinary initiative to produce novel, instant materials for designers, enabling them to create garments in new ways. The spray-on fabric will liberate designers to create new ideas for fashion. In addition to innovations within the industry, the spray-on material offers a carrier technology for delivery of fragrance and medically active substances, and enables people to personalise their clothes in infinite combinations.

The material is recyclable, and according to a model who wore the material we’re led to believe the ‘fabric’ feels like a second skin.
