REPORT_ Sales of UK retail have risen 2.1 percent in May compared to the earlier month.

Compared to the same month last year, sales were up 1.9 percent. In April, high street sales fell 1.1 percent.

Julie Palmer, Partner at Begbies Traynor, said: “As retail sales bounce back after a difficult start to the year, we are seeing clear signs that consumer confidence is returning to the market. Internet sales are still steaming ahead, leaving growth in physical spending subdued, raising questions about whether the business rates system truly reflects the modern face of retailing. Whilst increasing the taxation to online retailers is fraught with complexity in an increasingly global market, the balance needs to be redressed if we want to save our bricks and mortar high street shops from extinction.

“Price pressures are expected to mount given the challenging 18 months the agriculture sector has had. We can expect to see food prices rising further this year although savvy shoppers will continue to benefit from special offers as the supermarkets battle it out to win new customers.”
