Whiteley retail development in Hampshire, owned by British Land and

Universities Superannuation Scheme Ltd, has announced that work has started on the 60,000 square foot second phase extension.

The 18 million pound extension located at the north east of the development will be anchored by a nine-screen cinema and is due to open in summer 2015. It aims to offer an additional 30,000 square foot for restaurant and leisure space to complement its strong retail offering, which includes Topshop, M&S, Clarks, H&M, Phase Eight, River Island and Sports Direct.

Claire Barber, head of shopping centre asset management for British Land, said: “We recognise the importance of high quality leisure offers in creating attractive shopping destinations. Whiteley’s second phase will complement our existing leisure offer to further improve the shopper experience and establish the scheme as a night time destination, helping to extend the centre’s trading hours.”

Phase two of the extension is currently already 75 percent let, with only two units remaining. The work will create around 180 jobs as well as a number of temporary positions during the construction phase.
