The US clothing brand Band of Outsiders has opened its first mono brand store worldwide in Japan. The more than 1,700-square-foot store takes up the ground floor of a three-story building in Tokyo’s Sendagaya neighborhood. The store was designed by architectural

studio Lot-Ek based in New York and Naples and known for its container projects. The interior is unusual as it is dominated by a large steel structure that the company calls “The Monster”. Its 28 arms move around on concentric tracks, which allow changing the look and layout of the store’s interior quickly and whenever desired.

New
concept revolutionizes store design

“The Monster has 28 steel arms that support every fixture in the shop – two fitting rooms, a checkout register, dress forms, display cases, hanging displays and a digital projector”, explains the brand on its website.

The Los Angeles-based brand known for its “modern, rebellious take on American style” has made sure that even visiting the fitting rooms becomes an experience. Each one is designed like a little portal “‘cause we love a good portal” as the company claims.

The store’s exterior is covered in a printable mesh fabric, which can also be changed quickly and redesigned for each season. The new Tokyo store carries Band of Outsiders’ men’s and women’s collections as well as a range of exclusive items like t-shirts, towels and totes.

Band of Outsiders is currently sold in over 225 stores worldwide, including Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman, Opening Ceremony, Saks Fifth Ave, Colette, Shopbop, Net-a-Porter, Mr. Porter, Matches and Lane Crawford.
