With today being Independent Day and this month seeing the launch of the new Independents Retailer campaign, the British Retail Consortium has said Independent retailers and the high streets need a programme of support

and investment from Government and local authorities to build on the efforts of campaigners.

With
consumers today being encouraged to buy from independent traders, British Retail Consortium director, Stephen Robertson, says ‘Encouraging people to go into stores they wouldn't usually visit so they can experience more of the variety of the retail sector is an idea we support. But reviving high streets can't be achieved by customers alone. What's needed for the long-term is comprehensive action to support and revitalise our high streets for the benefit of all retailers.”

The BRC is keen to make bodies aware that whilst today and this month is indeed a progressive step, far more needs to be done to make a continued difference.

Robertson warned against thinking that one part of the retail sector could only succeed at the expense of another saying that centres benefitted from a good mix of unique businesses alongside recognisable big names. “Given the right conditions, independents and multiples can both thrive” said Robertson.

He encouraged the idea of creating retail centres with good transport links, and affordable parking to attract shoppers as well as looking at areas with lower property costs.
