Cambridge Satchel Company wins royal recognition

British accessories label The Cambridge Satchel Company, known for its retro leather satchels, has scooped the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise for its outstanding achievement in international trade. The Queen’s Awards, announced each year

on the Queen’s birthday, is the UK’s highest accolade for business success and has been awarded to the Cambridge Satchel Company in recognition of its export achievements and outstanding performance in international trading over the past three years.

Launched in 2008 by entrepreneur Julie Deane, the accessories brand now sells in 110 countries and has a turnover of more than 12 million pounds, of which about 5 million pounds is from exports. One of the biggest successes for the satchel company is the US, which accounts for 28 percent of all export sales.

Commenting on the brand’s latest accolade, Deane said: “The Cambridge Satchel Company will celebrate its fifth birthday this year and what a year we are having! The opening of our first shop in Seven Dials, Covent Garden, moving to a new factory, international awards and now this - we couldn't be happier or feel more proud.”

As a winner, Cambridge Satchel Company will receive a grant of appointment, the right to bear a royal emblem for five years, a symbol of quality and success, which can be used to promote the company in advertising, marketing and on packaging.

This latest award follows on from a successful year for the company, which has included a win at the WGSN Awards in the Footwear & Accessories Design Team category, a Drapers award for Fashion & Retail Personnel Smaller Etailer of the Year and Ruban d’Honneur status in the European Business Awards.

There could also be further success for the accessories brand as founder Julie Deane has been shortlisted for Entrepreneur of the Year at the European Business Awards, which will be announced in June.
